If you’re looking for someone to look up to or aspire to be like professionally, look no further than Nick Stover. Nick Stover is the Director of Social Media for the Athletic Department at the University of Louisville. He came to my social media class on Wednesday and gave a great guest lecture. Stover informed us of just exactly what he does for the University and surprised us all with some of the ambitious things he has accomplished.
While in college, Stover had over 100 work experiences by the time he graduated; rather it was volunteering or internships, it seemed he did it all. Way to make me look bad there, Nick. He told us he had at least two internships basically at all times, each in a different field. Stover stressed to us just how important it is to be diversified in many fields, especially if you’re not exactly sure what it is you want to do when you graduate.
In July 2012, Stover joined the University of Louisville as the Social Media Director. He told us about how he got the job, and I don’t think there wasn’t a single person in the room that wasn’t impressed. Stover applied for the job and was one of hundreds, they told him. He was one of the selected few to make it to the phone interview stage of the process and instead of waiting for the day of the phone call; he showed up in person and wanted a face-to-face interview. Who does that? Nick Stover does. If that’s not ambitious, I don’t know what it is, but his interview process didn’t end there. They wanted to see how he looked on camera and more than likely how dedicated he would be and asked him to send in tapes of himself. Oh boy, he did just that. I wish I could’ve seen the look on their faces when they seen Nick Stover jump out of an airplane and put up the L1C4. And he’s even afraid of heights! Needless to say, he got the job.
Stover was technically the first athletic social media director in the country. Way to go UofL for that one! In the short time he has been here, Stover has had some great accomplishments. He coordinated the first ever digital pep rally in college sports for the UofL v. UK Football game, which reached over 320,000 users, 207,000 of those people more than once and 77,000 of those people ten or more times. How amazing is that! Talk about reaching a huge audience. Stover has also made it that UofL is the only NCAA institution that has weekly content scheduled for release across 20+ sports programs.
If you go to UofL or are a UofL fan, you know that last year UofL had one hell of a year in sports. Well, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that last year is the same year Stover started with UofL. Obviously, he doesn’t play for any sports for the University, but it’s his job to promote them through social media and just like the sports teams, he does one hell of a great job!
